OneChild Is Delivering Hope in Hard Places with the Help of G2i

Hard places are the places of despair. Places of violence, oppression, extreme poverty, lack of opportunity, and adversity that threaten children. Those places are where you’ll find OneChild, a non-profit organization providing Hope Centers where children can come to receive vital care and life-changing development opportunities.
OneChild wanted to take their mission a step further by creating a mobile app that would bridge the gap between generosity and need. Their vision was to forge lifelong connections between donors and the children they support.
THE CHALLENGE
An overstaffed but underperforming offshore team
OneChild grappled with a 12-member offshore development team bogged down by technical debt, underdelivering on the promise of a functional MVP. It was supposed to be a 6-month project, but after a year of work, the team's code failed to meet industry standards and best practices.
THE SOLUTION
Strategic downsizing with quality contractors over quantity
OneChild decided to find individual contractors instead, significantly reducing the team to four key roles. This strategic shift was spearheaded by Troy Reiber, Platform Architect at OneChild, who set out to find a senior tech lead, a React Native developer, a junior engineer, and a QA specialist.
Few options could provide OneChild with a proven React Native expert; even fewer could help them stay within their project costs. How did G2i do it?
"The vetting process went pretty well to get to Kareem... What they said about him was true. And what Kareem said about himself was true."
- Troy Reiber, Platform Architect
Gold-standard React Native assessment: Since 2017 we’ve built and fine-tuned a proprietary React Native assessment designed to flush out those who just "know" React Native versus those who've written production-ready code.
Recommended profiles: We cut down the noise so the OneChild team could focus on the best-fit candidates. Instead of looking at an assessment score, OneChild had access to our recorded technical interviews for a deep dive into each developer's technical proficiency, problem-solving, and communication skills—reducing the risks of a bad hire.
Access to a global talent pool: By tapping into G2i's community of over 1,500 engineers from across 122 countries, OneChild found developers within their budget without compromising on skills or experience.
THE OUTCOME
Higher quality code at 2X the production speed
OneChild's strategic move to work with handpicked independent contractors created a surge in productivity and enabled them to make remarkable progress on the Bridgely mobile app.
With strategic resource management, technical rigor, and G2i as a trusted partner, Troy's 4-person team has outpaced the offshore team's output, delivering higher quality code and getting the app in the hands of users faster than they thought possible.
And here's how the Bridgely app is making a difference today:
Troy's tip for remote engineering teams
"Have detailed project management and communication systems, such as Slack and JIRA, to support remote, independent work. This not only streamlines workflows but also ensures that teams can operate efficiently and cohesively, regardless of their physical location."
- Troy Reiber, Platform Architect
